IPL bitumen rheology expertise

IPL has refurbished part of their northland lab to incorporate & provide bitumen rheology capabilities

Tests required to assess bitumen rheology are now up and running. They allow us to establish whether the bitumen manufactured or importand into NZ complies with the new performance based M1-A specifications in NZ. IPL worked with regulatory bodies, suppliers and customers to gain a comprehensive understanding of product specifications and has developed four (4) specific tests that provide additional data to help establish the bitumen rheolgoy:

  • ASTM D2872 - Rolling Thin Film Over Test (RFTOT)
  • AASHTO T315 - Rheology of Asphalt and Bitumen by DSR
  • AASHTO T350 - Dynamic Sher Rheometer
  • ASTM D6521 - Accelerated Aging of Asphalt Binder

Increased infrastructure development and additional vehicles on roads has led to the adoption of performance based M1-A specifications in New Zealand. IPL have developed our bitumen testing suite to include the additional testing required to meet these specifications.
The bitumen testing we provide is part of our customers’ Quality Assurance plans to ensure the bitumen manufactured or imported into NZ complies with M1-A specs.

Crude oil and condensate testing

Crude Oil and Condensate

Crude assay is essentially the evaluation of a crude by physical and chemical testing. We can assay the crude to evaluate the boiling range distribution of the cut points or complete a comprehensive characterisation that includes full chemical testing of the various boiling range fractions produced from the distillation.

Petrol analysis

Petrol / Gasoline

Detection of trace and ultra trace concentrations of total mercury including crude hydrocarbons, condensates, LPG and gas streams.  IPL utilises two methods of quantification to determine mercury to a limit of quantification of 0.2 ppb ug/kg.

IPL is the first laboratory in NZ with the capability to perform the required weathering and dispersant testing for oil discharge management plans as regulated by Maritime NZ.
